Connecticut State Park Journey: Fort Griswold and Fort Trumbull

It has been a while since my last Connecticut State Park journey! Finally got back on track and my family and I visited Fort Griswold and Fort Trumbull. They are close to each other and can be done in the same day. We visited them and then went to Mystic for lunch. I wanted to visit Fort Griswold around the 4th of July; give the kids a little history lesson and Connecticut’s part in the revolutionary war. I don’t know if they enjoyed it or not but my enthusiasm must have been noticeable and no one complained.

Fort Griswold

I loved walking around the grounds! There is an area where the old barracks stood and where officer quarters had been, You can walk through the tunnel and see the trenches on the opposite side and then the cannon section is closer to the water. Fort Trumbull can be seen across the river. There is an old colonial house on site as well, where soldiers were taken and cared for.

You can go in! We did!

Fort Trumbull

Unfortunately we went on a Monday and the museum, visitor center and the inside of Fort Trumbull were all closed. It was a bummer because I would have loved to go inside. Another time I guess!

I don’t have as many photos because I was carrying the dog :)

These two state parks were numbers 34 & 35 for me; only over 70 more to go! :)
