Let’s chat autumn fashion! In my quest for sustainability and ease with my style, I’m focused on layered neutrals for fall. Recently on Fairfield County Mom I wrote about mix and match styles (see here). Today I want to wander around the topic of a groundbreaking idea for fall, layers (I’m completely being sarcastic!). I decided for October to focus on a capsule wardrobe. It includes pieces to mix and match and layer. Let’s dive in and be fall uniform ready.

Core Tones
Base colors to choose from are personal. They can be beige, taupe, ivory or even black or navy. I’ve been sticking with navy this fall. I love denim and having navy as a base core tone allows me to do a lot of mixing and matching. Pick a color based on what you see a lot of when you scan your closet.
Accent Shades
Last year I wrote about using the color wheel to get dressed (see here). Picking accent shades is where this comes into play. For autumn we tend to lean into earth tone shades, like olive, chocolate and navy. Accent shades can be where you add in layers to your outfit. Think vests, blazers, coats, scarves or hats.
In my outfits above, I have mixed in some darker grays and touches of white and brown, along with a burgundy bag. I didn’t go too drastic in accent colors for these looks. I wanted to keep it all neutral. This way I can add in more layers as needed and everything would match.
Texture
Textures is where fun and personality can come in! They give your wardrobe some interest. Textures make neutral core tones come to life. For my wardrobe I have loved adding lace base layers in. I have a lace ivory top and a lacy black top. I like their versatility because these tops can be worn alone on a warmer autumn day or under something for a cooler day.
Other textures to consider are knits, wool and tulle. For the outfit below, on a warmer autumn day, I wore a tan core color. Accented with a green barn coat and burgandy bag. My ivory lace top served as a core neutral base but added in that texture I’m talking about.

I have to mention that having these layered naturals for fall has made my life easier! I also have to say I have been wearing other items outside this fall capsule wardrobe. It’s not meant to be all or nothing, just simplification for getting ready on a busy morning. Hope this helps someone out there!
