This blog post is all about visiting libraries while traveling! I’m not saying all your vacations, but trips to cities. I’ve noticed I’ve added libraries to my itineraries over the years and we always love visiting them. Here is why you should visit libraries on your vacations.
1. Restrooms
Let’s start with the basic reason, a clean restroom! Libraries are open to the public and have plentiful restrooms. This is especially helpful when traveling with the kids. We were strolling around Boston a few years ago, rain was pouring down, we needed to find a bathroom. The Boston Public Library saved the day!

2. Architecture
On my recent trip to Chicago I walked my own architectural walking tour (a blog post on that soon). On my list was the Harold Washington Library. The building was constructed in 1991 and the owl sculptures on the corners of the building are stunning. I’m an architecture lover and willing to stop to see any beautiful building.

3. Art
Libraries are free museums! The New York Public Library has a significant art collection. I’ve gone to the 5th Ave/42nd St location twice in the last year.

The Boston Public Library has a lobby/stairwell that looks like you stepped into a museum in Europe.

The courtyard is beautiful too…

The art collections lead me to the next reason…
4. History
Libraries are a part of our history. They tell stories about the development of our cities. The libraries house important information about history. They not only serve as art museums but history museums as well.
The NYPL has lots of historical artifacts inside. I was particularly drawn to George Washington’s hand written farewell address from 1796.

The Chicago Cultural Center is the original Chicago Public Library. It’s still free to go into (with restrooms!) and is a marvel to walk around and explore.

5. Holiday Joy
When visiting NYC for the holidays I had no idea how much I would love the Christmas tree in the lobby of the NYPL. It was gorgeous! Made for holiday joy.
6. Kid Spaces
My last reason you should visit libraries while traveling is for the kids. A lot of larger libraries in cities have separate kid zones. Areas filled with not only books but puzzles, games and other fun activities. This is especially great if it’s raining outside. It’s also beneficial if your child needs time during your trip for some kid fun. A respite that is free!
Have you ever visited libraries while traveling?
